Named after “iolite” the Greek word for violet, it has a strong pleochroism which is an optical effect where the stone has two different colors when seen at different angles in sunlight. It was due to this effect that the stone was referred to as “Vikings’ Compass” as the Vikings used the stone to determine direction on overcast days.
