SILVER

Sterling Silver is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals and alloys, such as copper.

Sterling Silver is stamped as ‘925’.

As with pure gold (24 karat), pure silver is too soft to make intricate and durable jewelry.

Adding copper to pure silver makes it harder and better for making jewelry.

Sterling silver is the highest purity(92.5%) of silver that still has the adequate hardness and metallic quality for fine jewelry.

Silver jewelry tarnishes over time due to oxidization.

Acids in the human body, humidity, and exposure to strong direct light can accelerate the oxidization process.

Tarnishing can be prevented through proper care; easily clean your silver jewelry by polishing it with a polishing cloth or dipping it in a liquid silver cleaner.

Please see our Jewelry Care section for more details.

Rhodium is a precious metal, a member of the platinum family.

Rhodium electroplating is used on jewelry, especially silver or white gold, to provide a surface that will resist scratches and tarnishing, as well as provide a white, reflective finish.

Silver can look beautiful with a dark finish, such as Native design pieces with deep carvings.

You can use tellurium dioxide and 1% hydrochloric acid, or a dip in polysulphide solution to create a deeper and more sophisticated look.

We also offer this service in store for small fee, depending on the piece. Please be aware that the blackening effect can be permanent.

INDIGENOUS ART

At Silver Gallery, Native / Indigenous artwork refers to all art pieces made by B.C. First Nations artists.

Generally, in North America, Native works include American Native art – a Southwestern style associated with silver jewelry, painting, and pottery, while Canadian West Coast art refers more to hand-carved wood pieces, gold and silver jewelry, and print work.

Our SilverTalks website mainly features Canadian Native artwork, as well as some American Native artwork in silver, gold, copper, and other precious materials.
