Salmon
The symbol of immortality and wealth, dependability and renewal. The Salmon is the life source, and is always treated with high regard and respect. Many First Nations cultures tell of the Salmon people living in the ocean, who offer their bodies as food to the human world and once their flesh is used they return home to put on new flesh and begin the cycle once again. Their stories teach to honour and respect what is given and to never be too greedy.
Ivan Wilson
Born in 1953 in Bella Bella to the Heiltsuk Nation Ivan Wilson began his journey as an artist in his late teen years. He always felt the art inside him but had to work to find a way to let it out. He began learning from famous carver Dennis Matilpi and developed his skills in wood carving and totems. Later he transitioned to fine engraving work in silver and gold, being taught and strongly influenced by his late uncles and famous artists Stanley George and Steven Hunt. Ivan is now known for creating beautiful traditional designs, in a contemporary flare using fine detail and strong linework.
