BC Jade (Nephrite)

This gemstone of British Columbia ranges in color from white through various shades of green to black. A silicate of calcium and magnesium, BC jade is primarily mined in northern B.C. where the world’s largest reserves of nephrite jade are found. It wasn’t until 1863 when a French mineralogist discovered that what was referred to as jade was in fact two different types of minerals: nephrite or jadeite. Both nephrite and jadeite have a long history in human Antiquity and has been found in various cultures around the world as ornamentation, tools, jewelry and ceremonial objects. In many cultures Jade is thought to bestow good fortune and peace, blessing that which it touches. It is also believed to embody the 5 virtues of humanity: courage, justice, compassion, modesty and wisdom.
