Salmon

The symbol of immortality and wealth, dependability and renewal. The Salmon is the life source, and is always treated with high regard and respect. Many First Nations cultures tell of the Salmon people living in the ocean, who offer their bodies as food to the human world and once their flesh is used they return home to put on new flesh and begin the cycle once again. Their stories teach to honour and respect what is given and to never be too greedy.

Robert Tait (Nisga’a)

Robert or “Chip” Tait was born to the Nisga’a nation in 1953 in Prince Rupert, BC. Robert comes from a very talented family, joining the ranks of his two elder brothers, famous carvers; Norman Tait and Alver Tait. In 1979 he completed the Indian Arts and Crafts Carving and Design Course in Vancouver BC, and began his apprenticeship with his brother Norman.

He is an experienced carver crating works of art in spoons, bowls, traditional ceremonial regalia, canoes and totem poles. His totem poles and canoes can be seen at the Native Education College, in Stanley Park in Vancouver BC, and as far away as the Field Museum in Chicago, IL. Robert progressed to jewelry engraving in the 1980s, focusing on silver and gold and opened his own carving studio from 1991 to 1994. His work is an intricate style, with a fine detail in design incorporating his Nisga’a ancestry. Sadly Robert passed away in 2018.
