Frog

A symbol of prosperity, wealth, and good luck. In Tsimshian culture, the Frog is known as the communicator between Earth and mankind. Their song carries divine power and magic; it represents Spring and the abundance to come. The Haida carved frogs on their house posts to keep them from falling over. When the frog is shown sticking out its tongue and touching another creature, it portrays the sharing of knowledge and power.

Eagle

A symbol of power, prestige and wisdom. The Eagle is believed to have the greatest connection to the creator and sends messages from the people to the spiritual world. It is a symbol of peace and leadership, the sacred down represents friendship and its feathers are used for ceremonies and rituals.

Colby Gates

Colby is from Old Massett, Haida Gwaii, BC, Canada. He completed the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program at the Native Education College in 2017. His work exemplifies contemporary Haida art by creating images with movement and fluidity while maintaining rules and respect of traditional form line. He works in many mediums, focusing mainly on sterling silver, copper, acrylics, and graphic design. Colby’s art has a unique perspective on form line that has developed throughout his life leading to the creation of a style true to himself. Haida artwork embodies images that describe stories, family crests, humans, animals, and mythical spirits. Each image Colby creates is based on these embodiments and represents his life experience, continuous journey, and rediscovery of his Haida ancestry and culture.
