VICTORIA HARPER
Victoria Harper was born in 1979 in Vancouver, and identifies with the Kwakwaka’wakw, Dakelh also known as Carrier and Cree Nations. She takes Kulus the baby Thunderbird as her crest. In 1999 she began a carving apprenticeship under her father, the Master Carver Charles Harper, helping him carve three totem poles for his Nation, which now stand in the Stoney Creek reserve. Victoria received further guidance and training under Patrick Seaweed and her uncles Douglas and Glen Harper and Dennis and George Matilpi, all carvers known for their works in wood and jewelry. Victoria has developed into an independent artist known for her attention to detail, clear, clean form lines and traditional designs, in the Kwakwaka’wakw style. She is one of the few female artists in the carving community and continues to develop her skills and art.
