Doug LaFortune Jr.
Doug LaFortune Jr., Coast Salish.
Doug LaFortune Jr., also known as Doug Horne in honor of his mothers family, was born in 1982 in Victoria B.C. He began carving in 1997 under his father Doug LaFortune Sr., a well known carver of totem poles and other wood sculptures, Perry LaFortune, and his uncle Francis Horne. He developed his understanding of formlines and carving skills from an early age and has now established himself as a successful, independent artist. Doug is best known for his exquisite totem poles, carved in local trees of red and yellow cedar.
He has developed his own unique personal carving style, incorporating more contemporary designs and colour choices, while maintaining his traditional heritage in design. Although he works predominantly in wood, he has also developed graphic designs for other medias including household goods and clothing. His art is highly sought after and clearly recognizable for its clean lines and elegant expressions.
