Brooches by Harold Alfred
Born and raised in Alert Bay, British Columbia on Cormorant Island to the Nimpkish band in 1953. Harold Alfred started to learn proper implementation of designs, history, legends and art forms at a very young age.
He studied under the supervision of present day Kwakwaka’wakw Master Artists; Tony Hunt Sr., Doug Crammer, and Oscar Matilpi. In the 1970s he completed the Indians Arts and Crafts Ethnology Course under Peter McNair at the Royal British Museum in Victoria BC, as well as formal art classes at Malaspina College.
He first developed his skills as a wood carver and participated in the restoration of mortuary poles within Alert Bay during the 1970s. After becoming an established carver he turned to working in metals and engraving, since then he has worked in numerous medias. Harold has also taught numerous classes on design, jewelry making and carving in Nanimo B.C. and in 2005 he was featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City called Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2.
Now after over 40 Years of carving experience Harold lives in Victoria BC and continues to create jewelry and develop his art.
